I don't mean to contradict a lot of artists here, but hear me out...
COPY A RAPPER.
I'm not kidding. When I heard 'Wu-Tang Clan's - Triumph' I memorized that entire song and could recite it at a moments notice...
Here's what happened:
There's like 5-6 guys on that track. Each one has a unique style that's different from the other. They all use different rhyme structures and metaphor styles, and they all can rap... VERY well.
When you get a song like that in your system, you find the one thing that unifies their flow... their dedication to the beat.
Regardless of style, or lyrics, or whatever, that adherence to the beat is why rhythm and poetry work so well on that track. Once you can flow solidly to a beat, you'll eventually find your own voice and style that suits you.
So no, I'm not saying 'copy another rapper's style'... but by being able to perform in another rappers style you automatically begin to train your mouth to have the capability to drop verses quickly and efficiently.
Another suggestion is the Anthem by the Wake-Up Show All-Stars... it has cats like Xzibit, Eminem, Tech-9, KRS-One, and a handful of other rappers with VERY different styles.
That's just what helped influence me big time.
GOOD LUCK!
