All about the confidence. I assume pretty much everybody can scream, and if you're having issues, I'll just just bring a 6in long centipede from Hawaii tied to some dental floss and let it slowly come towards you until your vocals are finished.

You should have some good ones then.

Screaming starts now.

ElectroKaplosion wrote:Use your diaphragm. If your chest is heaving upward you aren't screaming right, your chest should be static and your stomach (diaphragm) should push the air out. DON'T scream with your vocal chords use your false vocal chords (this is kinda hard to explain so I would look it up on YouTube). If you do use your vocal chords you WILL tear the inside of your throat to shreds. Also start with a whisper scream and build up until your can do a full song. Your throat will be sore, no exceptions. Drink lots of water! Hope this helps!
This is true for false cord screaming, not for fry screaming, hence my question of which technique you're using.

Well how about a little more specefic, how about growling - any advice on growling?

Like those sorts of gutteral vocals, are they something anyone can do if they get the technique or does your vocal chords effect your capability, or at least the aggressiveness or other parts of the sound, of your voice?

Also I'm curious, is it one of those things where like once you get it down, it's something easy to do, or is it something you have to continuously work at to get with any consistency? (Like I found with guitar it was near impossible for me to tremelo pick for a while and after working at it enough suddenly it just sorta "clicked" and I could pull it off easily, does it tend to be that sort of thing where once you get the "click" it's no problem?)

Hahaha. People mad now. :P

I'm not crazy about squeals myself, but I'm also not huge into deathcore, grindcore, death metal, black metal, (insert any other subgenre of metal or metalcore that uses squeals here). I don't mind them when they're used sparingly.

Back to screaming, I had no idea there was jargon on screaming vocals (vocal fry, etc.) I always just...well, screamed. I taught myself through imitation mostly. I listened to some songs and bands I really liked and tried sing/scream along. Once I started doing original stuff, I developed more my own style. What everyone else has mentioned sounds pretty spot on though. Just like most things, you get better with it over time.

Growling's a little different from screaming IMO. It is very guttural. I just lower my voice and add a little rasp to it...I also cup my hands around the mic to give a little distortion too--this is with a dynamic cardioid mic btw (Shure S58). I'm assuming anyone can do growls to some extent. And personally, I think screams/growls are something that once you get can be performed with consistency. I've been doing scream vocals for years. I've improved and picked up some stuff along the way. I also stopped for a long time and started back up again recently and I was able to jump right back too it.

Not sure if that really answers your questions :/
