How did you started?

Postby Toucan » 07 May 2012 09:12

I now know how to use fl studio, fully. So what's next, which genres would be the best start? And how to start with a track, like first make a shitload of presets and then take a amount of them and use them in a track? So, how did you started, and how do you do it now? =)

I got started by thinking about what music I wanted to make (easy listening and trance), found some presets, then messed with them unitl I had something cool. Eventually, I found that I loved making dubstep and hip hop, now I'm doing all 4. Honestly, my main advice is to not be afraid to mess around with your synths and effects. I was scared to start programming and EQing my own synths and drums, but once I started? It wasn't that hard. You'll be surprised what you can do.

But don't feel afraid to use presets and stuff too, it's not as big of a deal as some make it out to be. :D

and toucan, personally I, at first decided I wanted to do trance and guitar stuff.
I eventually gave up trance music because it wasn't really my style. So now I'm neoclassical guitarpony! XD

But eh, didn't you also tried alot of genres, to figure out that trance wasn't you, but guitar stuff instead? Because, it sounds like a good idea to try alot of stuff. =)

Started by listening to Glaze's, Tomb's and AgileDash's work, sending them youtube messages and started learning myself. I choose the genre i love and listen to the most - progressive house and trouse, with a reason that you probably want to do something you like listening to. Its hard to start, but let the fact that you learn something new everyday drive you.

Try all kinds of things, you never know what you might enjoy. Or stick to one. It's all up to you, honestly. I've done all kinds of genres, and those 4 just stuck, yeah. But some genres (trance and such) are a lot easier to make than others (dubstep, d&b).

Edit: feel free to add me on skype (psleater21) if you want to talk about any of this stuff. I'm not very experienced, but it never hurts to talk to another newbie either. xD

Yes I know, I make bangers all the time in 15 minutes and all the ladies are at my feet and all the dudes ask me "Who made these banging beats" and I tell them it's me and first they don't believe me but I now have proof

Look out for my new EP with Skiralex and Flux Pavlon coming out February 30th

My best friend Cyrricky got me into MLP and Electro. He introduced me to Reason, which at first I sucked at, but now I'm okay with.

Thanks everybody!
But eh, if i ever gets the feeling to pause a WIP, and want's to start on a new track. So i work on them both at random times? Is that a bad? Or doesn't it matter?

I started by making crappy atmospheric stuff that was an attempt to approximate UK dubstep. Then I tried a few house tracks. But once I got ahold of some hip=hop loops, figured out drum processing, and got Guitar Rig, I started doing my own thing. I don't really start with any sort of influences or ideas I want to create outside of the odd melody I have floating around in my head, but I tend to build most of my stuff around a strong beat and heavy guitars. I don't really know what genre it is - maybe you can tell me when I get of my ass and start releasing it

But the whole philosophy I apply to music-making is pretty much just to do what sounds right. Don't worry about genre, and don't have some sound you're desperately trying to replicate. Just sit down and put your thoughts down in the sequencer.

EDIT: Don't worry about having multiple WIPs; I think I have about 10 unfinished tracks laying around, but I just work on them a bit now and then. They're finished when they're finished, and unless you like the idea of the 20-Hour Guillotine, then don't stress it.

It's really hard to impart workflow, and it can be affected by the nature of what you're writing. A lot of people work out the skeleton of their track before they get started, using presets and simple sounds, then work their way through, fiddling with each sound until they get it right. This is probably the "correct" way to do it. For me, it just doesn't work. I build my sounds first, then let the track evolve around the sounds. But then, if I'm doing something more poppy, with verses and choruses and whatnot, then I might put the layout before the programming.

A lot of people also do their work in bits and pieces over time. You can experiment with the notion. For my part, it mostly doesn't work out. Eight times out of ten, if I don't finish composing a track in the day I start it, I never really intended to finish it. Mixing the track is a different matter, and can take as long as a week, but leaving something sitting isn't really conducive to my work flow.

Honestly, do whatever works for you. Start where your inspiration starts. What's really important is really that you can stand to listen to whatever comes out.

Okay thanks everyone! :D
One of the genres i love, is the combination of dubstep and reggae =)
But i dunno how the genre is "built". So, what's the best way to find out how the genre is built? Listen to the genre and listen to what instruments and stuff are used? =)

When I first got started (probably should not be using the past tense there, but whatever), I completely ditched the idea os "genres". I just made whatever came to my mind without trying to fit it under any sort ofnegative label. Eventually I noticed I was more inclined to make trance and orchestral, so I began to focus my efforts in those areas. While I still experiment with other styles, I find those two come to me the easiest - trance in particular. Combining them is slightly more difficult but I just love the results.

This may or may not work for you, but I suggest giving it a shot anyway. Start with an idea - a theme, a person, an emotion - and just go from there and see what happens. Don't worry about whether it sounds good or (perhaps more importantly) whether it fits into a genre. The idea is to see what you are naturally inclined to make, and then work from there towards your preferred genre or style.

always did little stuff with a midi sequencer since I was about 14, just short random orchestral stuff that I liked the sound of.

Picked up LMMS and FL a few weeks ago, once I got a computer that can handle the programs. Still learning how to navigate effectively.

As for setting up the workflow, I have my new layout that I'm going to use. (My old was doing everything at once, nothing ever gets done.) It's the same as for my story writing, just never thought of crossing it over.

Think of what you want to get across to the listener (emotion), create the outline (the melody), choose the environment (what sounds you will use, much of which you may have thought of at an earlier stage), arrange your sounds the way you like it (Back-up the melody so it is amazing!).

Urg, I just get up early in the morning, bang my head on my synth and music pops out. Then I give that music a name. Sometimes it's a winner, and I give myself a gold star sticker. Sometimes it's bad. But it's all in the process. Also, my head knows music theory, so just screwing around on the keyboard makes cool stuff pop out, then I use it.

Also Dr. Drum is 4 nrds. Windows movie make is what I use to make music. Always use the star pop out title, it's sooper sxy. And makesure 2 kp the deefult bloo bg.
