need ideas. for new songs to make. or tips. on how to do match a beat with vocals. or recommended freeware. anything right now is good. I need a lot of tips. Doesn't have to relate to anything. Just list the genre of music that the tip relates to, or what (so and so) effect does, or what (so and so) means, and other general tips for music making. Guide in general I guess. I need everything explained, it you guys don't mind. Pic related.

Do a glitchy song. Nothing but vocals to make the music.
And maybe a bit of ambiance if you want. Under 90bpm.

Think of dim lights and poisonous snakes when you're making it.

Yeah, I've been doing some stuff.

But it does sound like a good idea.

If you have a keyboard available to you, it helps to just start playing random notes and try to make a melody. Also just go out and try to listen to the sounds of nature and make music out of individual sounds. Or just listen to a song but completely shut out the world. Just try to clear your mid.

If you know theory, you can try doing rearrangements.

I do have a piano (spanish one I think) that my family has owned since I was born and earlier, so I can do that, but no midi or anything.

And I'm taking music theory next year

When I write my slower jazz piano stuff, I dim the lights, pour myself a glass of wine (or seven), think of a memory (usually something solemn), and get writing. For me, memories and emotions are some of my biggest influences. I wrote these two tracks after getting myself into a certain mindset and letting my emotions do their thing. It works amazingly well.

Good luck, man. (:

more songs have been written on the influence of various drugs. I'm not recommending drugs for those who are under-age, just saying that music history has shown this to be true. ;)

I just made this list you can peruse. I would recommend feeling inspired first and foremost. Whether that means watching a few episodes of the show to get an idea or find a coool sample OR listening to other music to get an "I'd like to do that" moment it's important to feel inspired and not forcing music creation. If you're really stuck, collaborate or remix perhaps.

Kudos for that gif. love that movie.

Also you can't force inspiration, you've just got to let it come to you. People can give you ideas, but inspiration is that one thing that you can't control.

When you have creative droughts, do a clean-up! Ensure your sample-library is organised, perhaps tidy your workspace, do a couple of tutorials etc.

When the inspiration does come, you'll be ready.

This happens to me like half the time I open up FL Studio. Downloading a new synth is almost guarenteed to get the creative juices flowing. Some favorite freeware synths of mine are Chimera and Tweakbench Peach, which both inspired songs of mine.

I just mash random notes together until I get something that sounds good. Which is sad, since I've been playing instruments for a while... But meh, I've made some sexy stuff like that (the crazy ass sexy fun drop of crazy synth near the end was literally made from me mashing random notes. I don't even know how that worked so well...)

Unless I'm working with a slower song that uses chords, then I actually take time to make sexy noise.

I don't even know how my brain works.

The point of learning an instrument (as in taking lessons for one) is to learn the most efficient techniques to play that instrument, but even if you don't take lessons, you can still get quite good at an instrument by just fiddling around with it for a couple hours a day.

When it comes to piano, I end up tripping over my fingers a lot, because I never took piano lessons, but that won't stop me from creating some cool riffs and melodies to build a song around.

It's never good to develop bad habits though, especially with skill/finger technique. What I recommend is, once you create something good, take the time to slow it down, play it the most efficient way possible, and then slowly work the speed up.

Also, if you can't play it, don't pencil it in. I practice each section, arpeggio, chord, etc. until I can record it close to perfect, and fix up small errors. Penciling in parts you can't play doesn't help you improve your technique.

Well, here's a list of what happens when (MY FRIEND PETE) trys to do music under the influence:

Weed: Don't do this. Despite what Woodstock will have you believe, weed will not help you write good songs. It will do the opposite, in that you physically will not be able to write good songs.

This is an example of what happened when (MY FRIEND PETE) tried to write a song while blazed out of his fucking mind. This is bad, even though all the words came straight from the top of (PETE'S) head. Weed is ok, according to (MY FRIEND PETE), if you are just making synths, but even then you don't want to do that because everything everywhere at all times will be distracting you.

And actually that's all I have from (MY FRIEND PETE). Don't do the stuff myself, but (PETE) was happy to share. I make music solely from the heart and balls and anus.

Weed just makes me want to stare at the carpet and touch things. It doesn't make me any more or less creative, it just sort of tunes me into a different sort of reality. Now LSD on the other hand...

I have found alcohol to be the best, though. At least for the kind of stuff I like to write. It brings my feelings to the surface, and I can put a lot more emotion into what I'm writing and really try to bring the listener into the sort of atmosphere I try to create. To date, all my best tracks were written under the influence of alcohol. Sounds horrible, sure, but it works.

EDIT: I'm not saying you need mind-altering substances to write great music, and I know /I/ don't. I just get a very emotional edge when I am on something, and it really helps me inject a bit of meaning into my music. If it helps, why not use it? I'm also very proud of a lot of my tracks I wasn't drinking while composing, like Pinkie on Ice, A Very... Chaotic Paradigm Shift and One Cold, Cloudy Night in New Manehattan. The point is... actually, I don't know what the point of this is. Blah.

lol. I've never needed to get high to write my music. I highly doubt it would help me or my weird creativity spikes. but apparently it helps some people.

And more power to you, man. (MY FRIEND PETE) never needs it to write his songs, either, but he still does it for fun sometimes and he sometimes writes down what he was thinking about at the time and then he uses those writings, while sober, to write his tracks. That's just how (MY FRIEND PETE) uses his time wisely. I keep telling him that he's just trying to justify being a lazy bum, but he insists that while it is non-essential, it's always a fun way to write a track.

wow xD all you crazy and stuff. I just... hm... I'm not sure what I do. I've heard from some people on the internet, that as a beginner, emulation of bigger people will help you out, so I just listen to music that I like or internet tutorials for stuff, and ideas will come :P
