Should I get the APC 40?

Postby Indigo Spectrum » 22 May 2012 19:11

Hey guys, so I've been looking at the Akai APC 40 and I was wondering if I should get it or not. I was wondering if I should get the APC 40 or some MIDI keyboard at the same price. I want to produce house and dubstep, is the APC 40 good for that?

Yeah, I know it can be used for live performances, but I also heard it's good for producing as well.

When I produce music I do have my APC pugged in and it sits right infront of me between my synths. I run ableton, when I am first getting a song started I create a few synths and drum lines and fire them in random order with its clip lauching buttons. Doing so helps me know what works with the track and gives me ideas on where to go with it and what to add. Aside from that it pretty much turns into a $300 play button.

I would not reccommend it for producing. A good midi keyboard with extra buttons and knobs would be much more useful as a first controller.

(I do preform live with my APC40 and Ableton otherwise I would not have gotten it)

Ah, okay, do you have any recommendations for a good midi keyboard?

Alesis QX25 - 25-Key Advanced Midi Keyboard Controller

never used this or anything, but this is the one I'm looking into... no clue if its any good. Looks fairly decent in my opinion. But I've never used a MIDI controller.

I would buy an M-Audio Axoim 49 mk2, its around the smae price as an APC40. A friend of mine has it, I have used it multiple times at his studio and really liked it. If you can go to a music store that sells midi keyboards and try some out, there have been other threads about midi keyboards here so I would suggest diging those up too.

yeah the APC 40 is kind of a bit complicated and has a lot of features than you might not use the first time you get it. but im pretty sure anyone who buys one isn't like, "DAAAAMMMM!!! why did i BUY THIS STUPID THING!! such a WASTE OF MONEY!!!" at the most they are probably like, "oh well. at least i now have the ability to trigger 40 clips with a push of a button."

but then again, what do i know? lol i havent even owned Ableton for a year yet so im still kind of a n00b. but the APC 40 is pretty sweet i gotta say.

Get an Eigenharp Alpha for around $6199.38

Or just get an Eighenharp Tau for $2498.54

You'll never be more confused in your life. My friend has one, and he's learning how to use it.

Are all those lil' buttons pads? Like, velocity sensitive? I get a lot of mileage out of my MPD18 pad. For some genres I could totally see going with a nonkeyboard controller, and this big APC thing sure gives you lots of assignable controllers. I'd argue that's more useful today than a big piano keyboard short on controllers.
