DAWs for Mac

Postby sdoggingsworth » 06 May 2012 06:57

I have been using Garage Band for years now, and its well-known limitations have actually pushed the boundaries of my creativity, and forced me to come up with creative solutions to work around them.

However, after 6 years in the Garage Band bubble, I feel I could benefit from an upgrade in software. Absolutely everything of any value seems to be unavailable for Mac OSX.

Can any mac-using ponies make a recommendation? I'm running Snow Leopard, and I'm not willing to create a Windows partition.

I do a lot of orchestral work, but I also do a lot of composing for synth instruments as though they were an orchestra, plus your basic rock/pop stuff.

There are many DAWs of 'value' for Mac actually.
But since you've been using GarageBand you should upgrade to Logic pro.

Logic pro works very similar to garage band and is used by amatures and professionals alike.

Well, even Cubase is available for mac, same with Ableton live.
Logic anyway, because it's the mac thing.
Hence, you need to... get one of these programmes for mac.

Cubase, Ableton, Reason, Logic Pro, even FL with bootcamp can run fine on a mac.

Hmmm. Everything I saw on Cubase and Ableton lead me to believe they were Windows only products. I didn't mean to imply that they were not of value. Steffan Andrews uses and recommends Cubase, which made me seek it out for Mac. Anyway, it was a poor choice of words there. It's just that the programs that were getting the best reviews seemed to be for Windows only. I was mistaken.

I'll look into Logic Pro, though, since it sounds like my best bet.

Thanks everypony! I can't believe I got replies so quickly. You guys rock. Woohoo!

I would definitely recommend looking into Logic Pro. You can get it on the Mac App Store and it is by far the best value.

I love Ableton, although I've only really used FL, Ableton, Garage Band, and a little Reason.

Ableton just completely resonates with me and I love it, and it definitely can be used on platforms other than just windows.

Mac has Logic
Windows has FL
The rest are cross-platform
