What am I doing wrong?

Postby BronyTuber » 05 May 2012 02:00

So I haven't been able to really finish anything in a while now, I keep getting about half way through a song and everything I thought sounded alright starts to sound completely off and not have an emotion behind it anymore.

I've been trying a few different genres of music, I know I haven't been at this long enough to really be "good" but I don't feel like I'm improving at all and I'm finding it harder and harder to keep trying.

This is one of my latest projects, I was really happy with it when I first started a few days ago, but now I rather... hate it.

Really what can I work towards improving on here as it really doesn't feel like I'm doing anything better than the first week I started.

Thanks.

*Edit: I'm planning on making this a pony song with some vocals I had in mind but I'm not sure its going to pan out at this point.

The only way out is forwards... seriously if you get caught in a loop here then you will never, ever finish the song. The only reason you hate the track is because you've listened to it too many times and haven't added to it, then you start to hate the track and yourself (happens to me). Even I start to get annoyed after listening to the same track over and over again without adding any new things to the composition. So what I do is let tracks that I haven't finished out and return back to it when I feel like I'm ready to make music. During this period do not try and publish WIP's I can never finish songs that are exported WIP's because I have no more incentive to create music for others.

And if you have nothing else to do automate the strings of the track to get more of a buildup/emotional characteristic for the track and less "cheesy."

Finish it.

I know this sounds difficult, but finish it. Once it's done, you can sweep it under the carpet and forget about it. But now, you've made a commitment to the piece and you need to finish.

You need to have the creative stamina to finish a song. If you never finish a song you never will finish a song.

It is probably going to be painful and you are probably going to want to bite the head off something small and innocent in your rage at the song. That's ok. You got it done, and that's all that matters.

The amount of times I have used "finish" in this post makes me sound Finnish

This right here is the best way to progress as an artist, finishing a track no matter what you think of it. I recently made it out of what your going through now, I had a bunch of WIPs that were going no where and I kept droping them. I then decided that I wasn't pushing mysle fhard enough to finish tracks and to do that I needed a goal for myself. I gave myself three weeks to create an entire song which to me is about as fast as I can complete good tracks. I mastered the track the day before my deadline and released it the next day. The track was my favorite track I have ever made to this day and it even got on EQD which was a nice reward. Now I have been finishing tracks and even being happy with them.

That was my experience, I'm not saying it will work for everyone but I have heard many people sya the same advice, finish the track.
