[SOLVED] Ableton midi question

Postby the4thImpulse » 03 May 2012 18:07

I use ableton Live to produce all my music and now I am working on creating a DJ setup with it for fun live preformance. I will try to make this a simple as possible and give all the facts out, please ask questions if I'm not clear enough.

- I have two controllers; a AKAI APC40 and a Hercules RMX. Right now the midi from the RMX goes through a seperate program call BOME and then into Ableton and the APC goes straight to ableton.

- I have customed mapped on of the knobs on the apc to an effect filter and I have mapped a jog wheel from the RMX to the start position on an audio clip.

The problem is Ableton thinks that they are the same midi device so they change both parameters at the same time and I have no idea how to tell Ableton that they are two diffrent control surfaces. Can anyone help me with this?

I have searched the abeton forums with no luck and been googling it for the past few hours.

I figured it out, it was something stupid I overlooked. Answer below.

Either your AKAI or Hercules should have some way of changing the channel they send midi data to.
i think that akai gives some software to change midi layout that is cumbersome to use, but works.

That would be the problem I don't know how to fix.

Obligatory relevant XKCD

You might want to actually say how you fixed it. You never know when someone will find the information hands.

Good idea.

Ok heres how I fixed it,

I have my APC sending midi directly to ableton, I have custom mapped all the knobs and faders on the APC to various functions in ableton (All the buttons had the stock mapping applied). Doing so changed some of the midi channel values which conflicted with the Hercules so Ableton didn't recognize the controllers as two diffrent sorces of midi input. When you custom map faders on the APC they get put into their own channel so instead of the APC using one channel it uses seven (Dumbest thing ever).

The Hercules sends midi through a program called 'Bome's Midi Translator', this program alows me to do things ableton can't do, It then gets outputed through another program called 'MIDI Yoke'. Ableton then picks the singal up from midi Yoke and puts in channel one (which is the same as the APC).

I then had to change the midi output of each individual button to channel 16 in Bome so ableton would recognize it as a seperate sorce of input. I could have set it to any channel between 8 and 16 as the APC uses 1-7.
