Good trance gate VSTs?

Postby DerpyGrooves » 22 Mar 2012 11:21

So there's one I've been using but TBH it hasn't really been working out anymore. Can anyone suggest a good gate for like, gallops/etc?

Regarding paid VSTs, Nexus is probably your best bet. Plenty of standard trance gates, in addition to being able to make a trance gate on any preset or sound. Nexus is pretty much perfect for trance.

As for free VSTs, Metatron is a nice one, although depending on which DAW you use, it may get glitchy if you run more than 1 instance of it.
DAW: Cubase 6.5, Ableton Live 8
Preferred Genre: Industrial/Trance
Hardware: Schecter Diamond Series Bass, Yamaha Acoustic Guitar, BP355 Effects Pedal, Keystudio 49K Keyboard, Akai APC40, Korg nanoKEY2 25k Keyboard

If you've got FL 10 it's got Gross Beat and its got some pretty sweet default gating patterns. loads up in a mixer channel slot.

I would personally recommend volume automation. If you get clicks, you should mess with the attack and release.

A trance gate isn't something you find in a VST. Pretty much every synthesiser out there is capable of making one in some way or another. You need to automate the filter somehow to obtain that stuttery, galloping effect. This can be done manually, through drawing in cutoff/volume automation, a square wave on an LFO and clever note positioning, The performer in Massive is very capable of creating this effect, or you can even just draw in the notes yourself in the pattern you want. Have a look around KVR for some synths, especially the TAL Audio ones. They're really good, and free.

I periodically look for a good (free) gate plugin like this, but I still haven't found a good one.

You might check out Stormgate, although IIRC there's something about it I don't like--might be that there's no knob to change the length of all the gate spots in a pattern at once.

You could also try Killergate+ (direct download link here). I also forget what I didn't like about this one; maybe it didn't feel "snappy" or something?

Actually, you know what, here, look at the gates listed here: clicky. It doesn't have Killergate+, but it has Stormgate, on of the other ones I was about to recommend, and a few others too. (I thought the download link was for all of them packaged together, but apparently it's just for "Super Trance Gate" or something.)

Another approach is to use a MIDI-controlled gate, like DFX Midi Gater. I believe I've had better luck with that strategy.

Lastly, check out the free synth TranceDrive. It has a neat little gate built into it. And it's pretty good for making trance sounds in general, as you might guess from the name.
