So I'm sitting in my closet, singing like Sweetie Bell into a $200 cardioid.

And yet It still sounds like I'm Scootaloo singing into a 5 dollar unidirectional from radioshack.

Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

cant find it but basically its most likely the acoustic reverberation from your walls try acoustic foam to dampen that

Have you tried searching in the forum in the technique section for all the previous threads on recording and mixing vocals? Start there as there's plenty of tutorials on how to mix and eq vocals well.

Otherwise post what you have so far and we'll be able to give you specific critique. I know i can't sing well so when i finally hear what i thought might be a passble vocal it often sounds out of tune because it frankly is. A good mic can't make you sing better....

EQ, reverb, compression, chorus (to make you sound like a chorus, who woulda guessed), etc. Oh, and sitting in a tiny little space like that is awful for recording. Tons of shiny echos and stuff. Sing in a more open place. Or if you have an acoustic panel place that in front of you. Or do you mean that your voice is all warbly and you can't really pitch control your voice very well?

Practice. Perhaps try singing one of your favorite songs, if you listen to yourself, you won't sing on pitch the first time, just practice getting the pitches down.

EQ, reverb, compression, chorus

None of these will fix a horrible performance and a good one shouldn't need lots of them. Don't emulate a chorus with a chorus effect. Record multiple takes or create harmonies in Melodyne. Either way, I'm going to take the OP's word and assume that he is performing well and not capturing it up to par. I suggest he reads into the proximity effect, and tries using a different room to record.

Yeah, chorus isn't the best to emulate a chorus, but whatever. If you wanted to do it the cheap way you could just take the same recording and copy it 5x over or something, then detune each one by a very small amount, set them to start at a very very very small amount of time apart, and that's also a pretty cheap way to get a chorus.
