20% Metal...er (a cover of a remix)

Postby metroponytan » 06 Jun 2012 14:34

I was wondering why there isn't a metal version of Alex S's 20% Cooler remix (of the Ken Ashcorp song) and it's probably because it's unnecessary to do a cover of a remix (Yo dawg, I heard you like remixes...), but I was wondering if it were possible so I went ahead and tried. The results are kind of fun. Check out the evolution:

Original Original: http://youtu.be/u6xRSafBV8o
Alex S's Remix of the original: http://youtu.be/NWd5x09gWoE
My unoriginal cover of the remix (work in progress): https://dl.dropbox.com/u/251369/20percentcooler_metal.mp3

Any vocalists want to take a stab at the lyrics? I think it'd be fun. :)

The idea could probably use a lead guitar, actually. You want to try 16 bars of a shred solo? That would be super fun, too!

I can help with guitars. What style of metal do you want? Progressive, Death Metal, Metalcore, Djent...

No time crunch on this, this is just to screw around! hehe

Hm, I'm not really sure how to communicate "wubs" with guitars, so the MP3 I posted was my best try at it. Djent is probably the closest thing I can think of that emulates Alex S's synths, but you never know. Ooh, do you know how to do divebombs? This idea could seriously benefit from those.

Only on my 6 string. My 8 string doesn't have a whammy bar. But my 8 string is better suited for djent.

Hm, well the divebombs might be more important than the actual style of metal. I'm kicking myself for saying that, but considering that the remix is dubstep, the closer we get to bass drops, the funnier (and better) the end product will be.

btw do you guys have a recommendation on virtual amps? I'm using Amplitube right now and it's ok, but obviously it doesn't beat a half stack.

I mic my amp. Sorry.

Concerning emulating bass drops, I would use a bunch of pinch harmonics and get creative. And switch octaves a lot...

Noted on not getting shred amp simulator lol.

So to get you guys rolling, the key of the song happens to be Bb minor and it's set at 110 bpm. Throw me some geetar tracks if/when you get to it and I'll repost in this thread with them mixed in. :D In the meantime, the curse of the guitar player is upon me as I'm trying to get a good tone out of this virtual amp.
