Pony Metal Album Collabortion Project (Working Thread)

This thread is for work and ideas for the album collaboration. The list of bronies working on this is almost set. If you absolutely must get in on this, I can let you in, but we already have a fairly large group for this sort of thing. If you aren't a fan of extreme metal and progressive music, this isn't for you. One thing that we will need is someone to make the album artwork, but that will wait until the concept is layed out entirely.

Genre: Progressive Metal, Death Metal, Grindcore, Dubstep, Electronic, Djent, Technical Metal, Deathcore, Metalcore, and whatever else we come up with.

Bronies working on this: ColorTwelve, Kyoga, MrGeorgeFTW, PrinceWhateverer, and ChromaticChaosPony (duh, of course I'm involved).

Instruments: 6 string guitars (Chromatic, Kyoga, and Prince Whateverer), Bass (Prince Whateverer), Drums (MrGeorgeFTW), Electronic stuff/Keyboards (ColorTwelve), Vocals/Singing (whoever the hell wants to), 7 and 8 string guitars (Chromatic, cause I'm cool), and Mixing/Production (everyone, but mostly ColorTwelve).

More info: This is going to be the most metal/progressive pony album out there. It wiill feature songs as short as 10 seconds, and as long as 20+ minutes. The timesignatures on alot of the song will be weird. Almost every song will have a solo. Any breakdowns will be in non-standard time signatures (a common djent/progressive metal practice). There also might be a dubstep track on the album. There will be 10 songs on the album, and they will all be about ponies. We will all crack down on making this during June (so school doesn't interfere). Some of the stuff on the album will be very emotional, while others will drive you to headbang furiously. It will be diverse. We will post teasers, demos, and studio reports (separately; we all live in different states) to get bronies interesed. We are not a band, but we are all equally collabing. Lastly, credit for this will go to all of the bronies working on it, not just me.

We will come up with an official name for the collab and the album later. Focus is on making the album.

This gets serious in mid-June, so get ready.

I can't refuse your offer Whitetail. I'm not sure if PrinceWhateverer will be available for the entire collab.

HerrPony, if you can sing louder and turn up the volume, you're in (we aren't all the best vocalists; except for PrinceWhateverer and MrGeorgeFTW). We could use a singer. I think I'll take care of growling on some tracks (like the grincore and technical death metal ones), since that requires more than regular growling/screaming. Think along the lines of pig squeals. Same advice for you, Kyoga (if you want to do vocals).

I'm suprised by how many of you want in on this. Versilaryan, you're welcome to join. However, I can't keep letting more people join in. As is, I have a large group of bronies to organize.

Just to recap, Versilaryan is the last person I'm saying yes to for now besides maybe Mixolydian (good friend of mine) or someone who could draw the album artwork, advertise, etc. We now have 2 potential bassists, 3-4 guitarists, an electronic producer/keyboardist, and way more than 4 potential vocalists (I think that everyone involved has offered to do vocals for some of the album).

If more roles are needed, then more people can join for those roles. But for now, we're full.

I can't do much pig squeal, but if you're looking for the "kind" of screaming I do
it's basically the singer from Arbiter, and the singer from Emmure. I'm just kind of... normal, when it comes to screaming. I'm a much better singer though.

That's okay. There will be plenty of room for normal singing, and core style screaming. I'll take care of the very extreme parts though.

By the way, best place to practice vocals is the shower. Lol.

just wondering, how are we going to do tracks in this? are we going to have someone submit a song idea and then we all collab on it, or is there something prince wants us to cover?

Based on my experience in making the album's intro and pitching a track idea to Chromatic, I guess it's something along the lines of any progress one makes is valuable for the whole project. That's how prog bands like Dream Theater work, everyone has ideas to pitch, and most end up in the finished tracks.

I just listed a section for bonus tracks on the document (stuff that won't officially be on the album). This will be bonus track number 1, and I intend to add more as we make mistakes or record something that we don't want on the album. Bonus tracks are stuff that isn't serious enough to make it on as a track (such as the collabortion idea) or stuff that there isn't room for (like remixed/extended/ otherwise altered forms of songs already on the album). Any song covers or directly ponified versions of other songs will be bonus tracks.

I'll focus on making this track after the first 10 are finished. Bonus tracks will be free with the full album or on our Youtube/Soundcloud channels.

By the way, I have no clue how we will sell this, even if we decide to sell it. Who knows, we might just let it be a free album just to get our names out there. Marketing ideas?

I totally call doing at least one VIP mix as a bonus track.

As for marketing, Bandcamp is easily the most convenient for both us as independent artists and for listeners, since it's quite likely that we'd set the payment option to name your price. To get the word out, I can ask DJ PON-3 to promote us, because he has a somewhat recognized brony music blog. He's already offered to promote the Lesser Known album, so we might as well give it a shot.

I'm not too familiar with registering as an artist there, but I assume that if any member of the project has one, we'd host it there, and if not, just make one exclusively for the project.

I saw it. It was awesome! You can definitely "take the lead" with the guitars. Just remeber that there are other guitarists that you need to work with, a lot of other guitarists...

Seriously, if Mixolydian joins, we will have a total on 5 guitarists on this project. I have never seen a band with more than 3 (Periphery has three guitarists; most other bands have one or two), so that should be taken advantage of (the shredding has been doubled!).

That would mean that every riff could be harmonized between two or more guitars, have a lead, and have a solid rhythm. Crazy?

Of course, I will have to double track anything with the 8 string because I'm the only brony here that has one.

Double ALL of the tracks! I'm definitely giving the leads to you guys. I can do simpler lead things but I'm no soloist.

I can also work with synths as well as some mixing/mastering type stuff. I'm not the greatest, but it's better than nothing! (Dubstep metal! Let's do it!)

Damn, I'm too nice. I said yes. This is now over capacity for vocalists. No more singers/screamers/etc., we have about 7. 7 vocalists is way too many (unless we make this a metalized version of Glee; NOOOOOOO!!!).

Yeah, you should be prepared, but you have until June, so I would worry more about planning, preparations, and songwriting.

You don't need to send in another sample, but you can if you want to. Also, I would suggest increasing the volume/gain on the program you are using, or mixing it afterwards. It isn't loud enough. That is an easy fix, and you have until mid-June.

Everypony, I updated the google document linked on the first page of this thread. The entire 20+ minute song has a solid plan. Very grimdark, and hopefully the focus point and best song on the album. I also layed out some stuff for bonus tracks to add to the end of the album. Make sure to check it out and input your own ideas.
