Any violin vst's out there?

Postby Ruka » 18 Jan 2013 06:24

Does anyone know of somesort of preset or some vst's one can use to get violin sounds?

I've been looking for a while now without any luck. I am looking for both a smooth, nice, soft violin to use in an ambient orchestra, and a sharp more aggressive violin for some epic "battle" music.

So if anyone could tip me of a way to achieve these sounds, please contact.

Are you looking for free synths or patches for violin sounds? Or are you willing to/want to spend money? I think that Nexus might have some violin patches, but I'm not too sure about other synths. FM synthesizers like Sytrus are pretty versatile, so I'm sure that you could probably get some string sounds out of Sytrus. I don't think you'd be able to do that with Massive, not without putting in a ton of plugins, but Pewter Robot did make a thread in the "Sharing is Magic" forum where he posted some Massive presets he made of some string sounding synths that just need some work...

If you want to buy or pay money for some violin synths, I'd go with EastWest Symphonic Orchestra. It has some of the best violin samples you'll ever need (as well as every other instrument ever ) but that's pretty expensive (up to $400+). Or if you own Kontakt, you could find some string libraries...

I'm not really a orchestral guy but there are several excellent products on the market, and each is useful in its own way. But i would suggest EWQL Hollywood Strings, Cinematic Strings and EWQL Symphonic Orchestra for Kontakt. I'm sure that there are other Vsts and sample libraries but the ones above are the ones i like the most ;)

I have a library called garritan Stradivari solo violin. If you know how to work it right, it's great sounding stuff. Not sure of its availability though, last I saw it was discontinued. If its no longer available for purchase, you might be able to find download links for it or something. I suddenly want to find my copy and install it.

Kontakt has a library, which name I forget, that has amazing orchestral stuff, which includes numerous versions of violins.

Or do it like me and get a detuned violin along with the patches.

I use East West Quantum Leap. It's got an incredibly versatile library with over 70 different violin sounds, as well as everything you'll need for a full orchestra. Definitely worth your money.

This is a pretty good free sample library of orchestral sounds. http://sso.mattiaswestlund.net/

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that EWQL also has Gypsy (which includes a solo violin) and another solo violin, for much less than the whole symphonic orchestra.
Also:
Neocymatics Hybrid Strings (A bit ethnic sounding though)
Garritan Stradivarius Solo Violin 2.0
Spitfire stuff (forget the name of the library)

Also, I believe that sample modeling is making a solo violin library, and it'll probably be pretty good once it's released. Furthermore, embertone may be making one as well.
I'm always half-asleep, and I hate dubstep.
Also, you know that other, way more awesome Nomnom guy who shows up on EQD sometimes? THAT PERSON IS NOT ME.
We just happen to have similar pseudonyms.

Generally with orchestral, you're going to want to go with samples. To use these, you're going to want Kontakt 5.

I recommend LA Scoring Strings and Orchestral String Runs for strings.

I took a look at those. Good lord, $1300?! I think I'll pass...

Yes, actually I own gypsy and the violin is one of the better sampled instruments within. I love all the other stuff too. Accordions and a delightful trombone. I hate the play engine though. It likes to tell me my ram is low when I have 8gb free and fail loading instruments.

DSK Strings is one of the best violin VSTs I've used. It is free, and has multiple instruments such as the cello.(http://www.dskmusic.com/dsk-strings)
