well, I guess I will post this here...
You guys probably don't really know me, but I talk a lot on #bronymusic and I do participate in some compos. so yeah.

THE TOASTBEARD MUSIC ARCHIVE PRESERVATION INITIATIVE

Okay, so I had this idea last week to start making 'compilation albums' of all the toastbeard compos. sci apparently had been having this idea for a while, but nothing ever materialized. So now I'm gonna be doing that.

Starting with the recent compo, I will start doing future compos too.

So now, I present to you, the first TBMAPI release!

Toastbeard Music Archive Preservation Initiative: ER304

I am sci and I endorse this post. (thank you for this)

though there are a few issues I'd like to point out:
1. the cover says "Music Archive Initiative". It should read "Music Archive Preservation Initiative" (since this is about preserving the music)
2. also about the cover, I'd move the credits to a .txt file in the zip
3. speaking of txt files...the logs are malformed when you open them in notepad.exe (lines end with "\n" instead of "\r\n". I'm not sure why notepad is so picky about that.)
4. it'd be wiser to name the logs "ER304_sync.txt"

besides that, there's also a question of:
what would be better: keeping the track numbers in sequential order (like they are now) or keeping the upload numbers (i.e., 1 through 9 are the same and then there's no track 10, seventh element being track 11...as ordered here: ER304)

....whoops that was a lot of words. but again, thank you for this

heh, no problem sci. And yeah, I'll get a new version uploaded soon enough with those changes. The log stuff is because I'm using Linux, so it saved it with \n instead of \r\n like Windows uses.

also, I think it would be better to keep it in sequential order like it is since that'd make it the same as an actual sync listen.

Forgot to mention that, but yes, when I have the time to do so I will be doing past compos. They're much harder to cover though since people have either deleted their entries by now or other problems.

Shouldn't that be a priority, since people are going to keep deleting their entries?

It is. All I'm saying is that it's more time consuming. I'm going to try to do at least two compilations a week, if I can. One for the compo of that week, one of a previous compo.

I suppose I should post what I wrote on tumblr last night here, since I sorta delved into more detail about my plans for this:

if you’ve ever participated in a compo at Toastbeard or MyLittleRemix, or you participate in sync listens at #bronymusic, you might be interested in this!

i’m going to start archiving the compo entries, and I will be making archives of the previous compos too!

Plans are to have at least two compo ‘albums’ released each week, probably on Fridays and weekends.

Songs will be meticulously tagged and stuff by me, track order will be in the same order as if you were participating in that compo’s sync listen. In addition, I will be including bonus items in each release. Cover art for songs made by the song creators, logs (from #bronymusic) from that compo’s sync listen (if available), and a nice picture from @CiiMassacre!

Re: Toast Beard Compo General

Postby sci » 08 Dec 2012 14:48

now that we're already on the second round of this thing, I might as well type up what it's about:

Toastbeard's Video Game Remix Compo! (VRC)

I'd like to clear up the timeline, and how this compo works.

Timeline
1. on the first friday of each month, a new VRC opens up.
2. on the last friday of that month, the VRC closes. the sync is that afternoon (or night, or whatever. timezones you know.)
3. voting opens after the sync, and closes on the following tuesday. Voting is more important here than the weekual compos, so vote!
4. After tuesday, if there are any ties / complications, zorg or sci will hunt down the winners and figure out what the next theme will be
5. after that, this entire list repeats again as the next month begins

so, remixing. What is remixing?
DON'T JUST SWAP OUT THE INSTRUMENTS. (though live/acoustic covers are acceptable, at least try to improv a little)

re-arrange the song. adjust everything to fit a new style. build something new around that bassline or chord progression. add a counter-melody.

basically: make it interesting.

additional note about mashups: they are allowed but STRONGLY DISCOURAGED. If you just take the vocals from one song and lay it on top of a song from this month's video game soundtrack, it will be insta-deleted.

Voting and song selection
you can remix any song from the soundtrack of the selected game of the month.

the winner of each round gets to select a game soundtrack to remix for the next compo. Only commercial games (no flash games) with ORIGINAL soundtracks (ie, not licensed music, not ambiance/sfx-only) are allowed.

Additionally, the game in question must have some resource / reference files for everyone to use. If none exist, you have to either transcribe each song yourself or pick a different game.

(Generally, most games will have a MIDI available on vgmusic.com or mirsoft.info, so that may help with game selection)

Right now, we'd prefer if you have some method of contact (like...being in the IRC channel, or giving an email or place you can be messaged in case you win), but if you don't have one, you can just enter your game choice in the description.

HOLY CRAP, I just checked vgmusic.com and I am in AWE. How did I not know this existed?? Some of my most nostalgia-inducing games are on there!

Take any element (song, quote, idea, character, event, ANYTHING) from Episode 6 of Season 2 and write a song about it.

I loved reading the chat log and enjoyed making a song for Toastbeard. While I don't know when our next Toastbeard is, I am looking for to it.
