"alone in the dark"- my first song

Postby Sabreon » 05 Jul 2011 22:10

Okay, so, putting together my first song, and thought I would run it past you all, see what you think, constructive criticism is appreciated. Is as of yet quite unfinished.
Not sure what it is actually going to be called yet, but it makes me think of Nightmare Moon in the Everfree forest, desperate, sad and angry.

Also, the Fluttershy soundbyte is kind of just for my own sanity and will likely be removed later. http://soundcloud.com/auko/alone-in-the-dark
Still figuring out the whole music production thing.

Pretty good for a first song! Kind of reminds me of the X3 Soundtrack...

I think the transition from the two sections at 1.38 doesn't quite work. I think that might be because the descending motif is a massive contrast to the sound world you created...

Also, that Fluttershy soundbyte made me laugh out loud!

Ah, actually, that transition is starting to grow on me after listening to it a few more time...:P

Dude, I love this. I do definitely get an Everfree Forest at night kind of vibe from this. The audio levels and mixing and such seem like they could use some work, although I'm a noob at that myself. Compositionally, though, I really really like it. I'm afraid I'm going to have to disagree with what Dr Dissonance said: I thought that transition was unexpected but a really nice touch.

EDIT: Evidently he disagreed with himself before I even had the chance to post!

Thanks c:
Will wait for some more opinions on the transition before I decide whether to tie it in a little more.

Thanks, it is real encouraging to get good feedback for my first piece.
I do know what you mean about my levels and mixing though, I really don't know anything about it, and if anything will try to sort that out after finishing it.

The only things I really know to say: I like it overall, the fluttershy timing was very clever, and I think it needs more harmonies.

Thanks, with the harmonies, do you mean throughout the whole piece, or just to fatten up some sections of it?

To be honest, I think I am crazy and that every piece of music needs to be a four part SATB progression that follows the circle of fifths.

I am going through a crisis about the way I view music. If I had to point an irrational finger of blame, it would be at R Gaynor Dr. Dissonance, but the irrational finger could be pointed at any one so...

I'll get back to you once I throw a bunch of random stuff together on sheet music as a way to resolve said crisis.

I love ruining people's lives! 8-)

Please call me Richard, or Dr_Dissonance when referring to me, so people actually know who you're talking about! That and it sounds so formal calling me by my last name... :)

Woah, just realised I had an entire track muted on that copy of the song.
Fixed version is here:

I'm guessing the new thing at 0.24 is the now-unmuted part? If so, BETTER! It made the movement from the low opening to that high bit before Fluttershy flow a lot better!

I think the track you had muted was what you needed. I like it a lot now.
