WIP/Unfinished Tunes for Feedback [see rules before posting]

Postby [voodoopony] » 29 Aug 2011 14:50

Rules are simple: Post feedback to at least 3 WIPs before posting your own.

I'll post some feedback after several posts since I'm OP. Huzzah!

Re: WIP/Unfinished Tunes for Feedback [no finished tunes]

I think that the first kick should have less distortion/noise, when I heard it later in the track it sounded good but I don't think that the first one should be like that. And I have doubts about the bass at 0:21, don't know if something like that is needed. But overall it's a very nice remix, the beat is really good, relaxing.

Since there aren't 3 tunes here yet, I'll post mine after just giving 1 feedback. Don't worry, I'll be back in this thread, a lot.

@Pinkie Cake - Love the sound of that lead. The buildup and everything sounds great but when the beat kicks in it seems to lack something, perhaps more percussion going on or something to fill in the emptiness could help. It sounds like it needs more energy.

I'll do what Pinkie Cake did.

Voodoo: I really really like the piano and the drums and and everything else and I don't actually have any problems with the song.

Pinkie Cake: I think the drums could have a bit more of a, I don't know, kick to them. Here's a good example of what I mean:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1hHq4FF ... page#t=74s

Everything else is great!

Now here's mine.

I'll probably be getting rid of the Friendship Is Magic, Bitch sample, cause it's really just a desperate attempt to make the song more pony-related, and I don't think it works well with the song.

[voodopony]: GAH SPOILERS
It's tough to make a beat that's 3/4 to sound right. It seems to work! I think it really fit best when you EQed the main sample up a bit, it just seemed to match the change in mood that you have going here.

Pinkie Cake: I'm not a big dubstep guy, but I do like the beat you're having here. I'm really sorry that I can't offer more critique, maybe a suggestion? I don't know how dubstep works, but maybe if the WUB was an octave lower? I wonder what it would sound like in powerchords.

Aussie: Sounds solid! My main concern is the distorted drops you have in the intro don't seem to fit very well. About 0:50 there seems to be something missing, like right here is where the song needs to pick up but it hasn't yet. Perhaps this is where the deep base could kick in, with some harmony?

I'll just leave this here

@Aussie - I think the sidechain can be toned down just a bit, it almost sounds like someone's playing with my volume at some points. Love the intro!

@Makkon - Sowwy bout the spoiler xP
Excellent track so far! Very dreamy and melodic. I don't even have anything to complain about XD

Voodoo: sounds much more catchy than original, but it could use some better drop at about 45. not too epic, and that 1st bass...

Cake: well sounding, but the hats seem kinda out of place before the drop.

Aussie: yes, a bit of toning down would help. also, try to make the hooverish patch less noisy.

Makkon: It sounds like an Epic theme for Some Zelda, or something, much more catchy than older stuff.

Pinkie Cake: I felt the beginning felt a little mundane, but then it built up to the main part and it was amazing! Also, considering it's called "Clownstep Bass Test", it didn't feel very bass-like!
Aussie: I enjoyed that! But those kind of electronic drops every now and then with the piano at the beginning didn't sound right for some reason...maybe the pitch they ended on was out of key? I dunno...
Makkon (Bell Crystal 001 loop): Arrgh, orchestral, I need to know what your thought process was behind this in order to reply properly! But, for now, I will say the instrumentation and the gradual changes in said instrumentation was nice, but there's only so much of one theme that people (read: me) can take without it being varied more harmonically. That little piano theme is one such theme, mix it up a bit!

My turn!

Explanation: This is meant to be battle music, but with a really helpless tone, like one side is so scared out of their mind that they're losing it...meant to fit with Littlepip's fight with Raiders in Ponyville from Fallout Equestria...
I think the drums are too loud, but what else is wrong with it? TELL ME!!!

Can't be off-key, since everything is taken from a MIDI that N3uro sent me.

I think the problem is it comes in too suddenly. I fixed that problem by filtering it, it sounds a lot better now.

I would post an update or something, but I finished it, so yeah. :D

@Aussie Something about that song you posted just seems...off, looking back on it. It seems to drag a bit. Maybe put a sub underneath to hold it together?

Oh, nevermind, you finished it XD

Makkon: BEAUTIFUL.

Dissonance: EPIC.

No problems with either song.

Now here's what I just came up with in like 10 minutes for the next toastbeard. Just me sampling a bunch of songs from my iPod. This is gonna be so fun!

Aussie: Those drums are really well mixed. I can never get my kick to sound so dense. Teachmehow.jpg

Dissonance: Some of the Timpani hits seem to get lost in the mix towards the end of phrases. I don't know if they actually need to come through louder of if that would mess with the overall mood. Just a thought though. Otherwise, that is VERY cool.

Makkon: What instrument is that intro even made of? I can't critique this. I'm in too much awe.

PinkieGuy: YES. EXCELLENT. I'd just add some verb on the claps (just a bit), and boost the mids of the wubs. PM me here or on skype so we can get this collab on the road (DOHOHOHOHO)

Pinkie Cake: I'd add a sub under the drop, give it some low end. Drums are excellent, though.

Dissonance: Loving the feel of this, I'd actually bring the timpanis out a bit more. But, classical/orchestral isn't my thing, so do what you do :D

My turn:

Yeah, pretty much ignore the section after the chorus. It's icky.

@ArtAttack - Sexy drum and bass. So far so good. Perhaps cutting off the bass frequencies from the hihats and the vocals will clean the mix a little.
@PinkieGuy - The voices may need to be heard more, they sound a bit blended in to the track.
@ Dr_Dissonance - Very eerie. Perhaps some of the strings could use some more dynamics.

@Voodoo: Loving this. If you're going for electro house, I'd have the hats come in 4 measures later, though. Adding some other percussion is another option, it seems like a "perc hits all over the place" track to me.

Wip of my entry for RW4, original song Summer by Griffin Village (Jackle App)
Not sure exactly what style I'm going for, it started out as a trance piece but it's sort of turned into a house piece or pogo apparently (which I have no clue what that even is so....).

-Transitions are really poor atm, I'll come back and improve them when I have more of it written
-Vocals are off, Cicrcuitfry told me the songs original tempo was 152 - it's actually 150 haha (simple enough fix I guess, just gotta fix all the drum samples since they don't get effected by tempo changes)

I'll probably swap out the pad I used there for one from massive or z3ta+ (if anyone knows any good pad settings or how to get a good pad in it I'd love to hear it), I just need to sample another DAW for that so I'll use that as a placeholder for now

The hi-hat stutter at the end is stupid, I'm going to remove it
