The Elements of Summary: S3 - "The Crystal Summary"

Postby Evdog » 12 Mar 2014 06:24

Almost a year ago, I attempted to make The Elements of Summary: a single 30-minute track, covering a range of EDM genres, that used samples from every single episode of Season 1, and summarized their core story and message. After months of trying to do this, I eventually burnt out at the 1/2 way mark, and gave up. Nowadays, due to circumstances, I have lost the old project files, so I couldn't resume where I left of, even if I wanted to.
(Link to my solo attempt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqxXoNYDuwQ )

HOWEVAH,
We're gonna try this anew, but as a group project this time. To be a part of this project, it is not required, but it is very strongly encouraged that you:

  • Are confident that you have an adequate level of experience and competence in producing electronic music. The more genres you're experienced in, the better.
  • Are team-minded, and are willing to bend or rework your personal ideas for the sake of the group.
  • Have good communication skills. If you have experience collaborating with other producers before, that will help a lot here.
Each participant will make about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes of music, which takes samples from a particular episode of Season 3. If you'd like to do multiple episodes, that's fine too, but it's encouraged that you choose episodes in a sequential order, so you have a block to yourself. That way, you'll only have to worry about one intro and one outro.

Any electronic genre is accepted (except for genres which harm the listener, Dangercore), however, you must be able to make the transitions work in a flowing manner.

I love this idea! Omnitronica wins.

Just not gonna participate for one sole reason: I can't for the life of me imagine how one can make the transitions between episodes flow without working in the project file of the one who made the part attached to one's own.

I'd rather just have there be one project file that everybody uses (though it would mean people need to have the same VSTs). I dunno, both are two flawed for me to work with.

Hey yeah I'd be up for this, sounds pretty cool.

Don't know how easily you'd be able to get 25 different people on board, so it might be worth having everyone pick two or three that fit their personal style. Not even necessarily consecutive episodes, since season 1 continuity was practically nonexistent anyway. I mean, yeah, it'd make the transition easier, but I'd rather pick out two episodes fit my style than trying to force two together for the sake of a transition.

Also, you might want to talk to zorg for tips about putting together the final project, and handling transitions and all that, since he's the one that usually runs the Remix War intermission collabs which I think are pretty similar to this idea.

Sure, provided the person before and/or after you is capable of it as well.
If not, you can teach them. Or maybe you could encourage a friend you know to take part next to you.

ExoBassTix wrote:I can't for the life of me imagine how one can make the transitions between episodes flow without working in the project file of the one who made the part attached to one's own.

What I had in mind is that each person would need to be in communication with the person before them, and a lot of stems would probably be handed back & forth (There should probably be a Skype group to make things easier for everyone).

I'm aware that, either a lot of planning would need to be set up so people know in advance if anyone's deciding to change the genre at one point, or if it'd work better with something closer to a cipher format. Only problem with that format is, though, if any one individual drops the ball, the whole project dies. (I learned that from trying to organize "The Year Harmony Died" back in 2012)

Magnitude Zero wrote:it might be worth having everyone pick two or three that fit their personal style. Not even necessarily consecutive episodes, since season 1 continuity was practically nonexistent anyway.

Good idea. It's just that I figured if the episodes were consecutive, it'd be easier for the artist to work with. If people want to do otherwise, that's fine too, but I expect that people are probably going to pick a couple or a few in a row.

eery wrote:I really dislike the idea of the constant ponysamples as you've done in your example. I feel its more about representing it without forcing it into context.

#ButThat'sThePoint
It was supposed to be a large, musical summary of each episode, that feels like you're taking a trip down memory lane. To quote from a commenter on the video of my solo attempt:
Bre A. wrote:It's like a musical journey through the first season.

If it was more about just representing it, I probably would've made it a 3-5 minute instrumental track (or maybe added some "20%Cooler.mp3", "yay.wav" & "LOUDER.flac" here and there) with a PMV and called it a day.

Magnitude Zero wrote:you might want to talk to zorg for tips about putting together the final project, and handling transitions and all that, since he's the one that usually runs the Remix War intermission collabs

Will do! ^_^

Do you guys think that maybe Season 3 (The Crystal Summary) should be done first, to test the idea out, since it's half length of all the other seasons?

This might be a good idea, but it almost seems like a large project in itself. I do like the idea of getting some practice in so we aren't stumbling around blindly trying to make everything fit together, but at the same time that would mean we'd be doing 39 episodes instead of 26. I wouldn't want people to be getting burned out.

I'm kind of on the fence about that. Some second opinions would be lovely.

I second that. Though we should start with s3 cause it is shorter. If people wanna do a s1 one, then there you go :3

Okay. OP is edited, and this project is now accepting members. Let me know which episodes you want to cover.

Once every episode is filled, I'm gonna need to have a group conversation with everyone involved (hopefully y'all have Skype or something...) and make sure everyone know's who is changing genres and when, and other things like that.

I was gonna do Wonderbolts Academy, but since that's taken I'll do the Crystal Empire episodes. Those should be cool to do. Though I'd need some advice on what kind of genre it would be best to start off with.

I would probably say House would be the best to start with. It's reasonably simple, and can be transitioned more easily. Nevertheless, you could always try something else if you feel more confident with it and/or it suits the episodes better.
