Rainbow & Rooted: Four's Fall Down

Current events we're participating in.

I notice two things...

One, people are posting things for R&R

Two, there's no sign up according to the first post

I would love to participate in Rainbow & Rooted, but have no idea how I would go about submitting since my track that I am working on...possiably for an EP...possiably for MLR Colman albums...would make anything to aid my trip to BronyCon

I love making music and would feel bad asking for a...of sorts...scholarship to BronyCon (being as what R&R is kinda about as far as I know)

Here you go, ajbiz11, an event page where you can submit a song.

R&R isn't working exactly as a "scholarship", but more of a competition where the producers who make it into the album get sent to BronyCon, so all you need to do is make a song and if the song gets onto the album, you'll get sent to bronycon.

That is the most generic bass ever, Enlightened. Just sayin', did you by chance download the Omnipony Bass Presets pack? huehuehue, making lame jokes. Anyways, nice to have you on board for this project, more competition = more rewarding feeling for those who make it and more smashed feelings for those who don't.

So I scrapped my "granular synthesis" song idea. Kinda. I might revisit it but it's a dead end right now so I'm not going to force it.

Have the intro to a Tavi v. Scratch type thing, maybe. It has no real orchestral organization as you could tell, just a piano, violin, cello, crappy choir, and some string section thing.

The end is a drop. Kinda:

The piano needs a reverb to fit with the rest of the instruments; it sounds much to punchy right now. Pianos are also usually placed either on the Left if they are accompanying or front and center if they are primo. The choir could be switched for a brass and woodwind section to make it sound more orchestral. Also, as a last note, orchestras have a percussion section too, and to add weight, a nice timpani in the back would be great.

Nice start, just a few little issues.

I'm just going to post my same song again because I haven't had time to work on it and I didn't get any feedback last time.

The snare seems a little (lot) loud in the middle section; and some percussive variation would do wonders. Actually, variation in general would be good- there are a lot of different "sections", but for each one, its just the same pattern or style over and over again, with no build-ups, break downs, or transitions between them.

So for the first part, after 0:12, when you bring in the REALLY low bass (seriously, you can only barely hear it) you might want bring in a super-saw of some sort in. Same thing for the middle, it needs more than just the one instrument and the backing.

Also, what is that weird voice at 1:30 supposed to be, because it just seems really off.

This needs quite a bit of work; just vary it up a bit, and work on transitioning between parts - either with drum rolls, noise-build ups, or tonality/rythmic shifts.

My song isn't supposed to be an orchestra. Think more along the lines of the little band thing Tavi was performing with at the gala. With a choir. I actually tried doing some brass but I seriously lacking in good brass sounds.

As for the piano's reverb, I could use some advice. Freeverb doesn't render right on my computer, and I already have a plate on the piano with high brightness and a medium tail. Wut do.

EDIT: Fixed (?) the piano reverb, panned stuff, choir is now trumpets. I would play the choir part on trumpet myself but I don't have a good enough mic or recording experience for that amount of volume.

Did you have any backups of the file? If not, try seeing if your system automatically created backups of the file or the folder. You could also do the whole system restore if you're desperate. Some DAWs also save previous saves of your projects, so you could see if yours does.

No backups, haven't set up Dropbox up to do that yet. No system backups, already tried restore. Restore doesn't affect non-system files anyway.

Dude, I'm using LMMS. It doesn't do anything automatically. I'm resigned to trying to recreate it, as I saved the orch-type intro as a separate project (thank god, that would be hell to redo) so I really only have to replicate the 16 measure dance thing at the end. Thankfully I did a quick render to show some skype friends:
https://soundcloud.com/evanhroberts/r-rdancestuffz/s-4seI5
I had changed some of the percussion and removed the sweep in the last 8 measures. Now to find all those drum samples...

Hm, that's so weird. LMMS would do these occasional saves automatically and they'd just be titled RECOVERY or something like that, so if LMMS crashed while I was working on something, it would have most of the stuff I'd done saved for me, and I wouldn't have to restart. I didn't use LMMS for very long though.

Yeah, my version of LMMS also auto-saves occasionally, but I don't know why.

The redone version sounds good, though, so at least it was only a small catastrophe.

I've used LMMS for over a year now and this has never happened. Auto-save is planned for 4.14 but I'm on 4.13 which still uses the recovery auto-save (which is really only good for crashing).

I think I've figured out what happened. Last night when I went to save and close out of LMMS, it must have taken too long so windows tried to tKill it. LMMS doesn't like to close by anything other than itself (Or killing the system process) so I'm guessing it never shut down completely/properly. Then at 3:00am my computer decided to update, which would involve windows force closing everything open, including the *hypothetically* still running LMMS process. I don't know how that would mess up every project file I worked on yesterday, but hey, any theory is better than none.

@Alycs that is not a remake, that is a render from the original file I did the day before yesterday so I could share it with some skype buddies.

Here is the remake so far:

Hm, quite the strange song you have there, but it has a lot of good potential ^^

The vocal glitching is good, the sound design is pretty good, the composition is good, but the "pause for dramatic effect" is sorta iffy on the over used side. You may want to change that out.

Yeah, that's what people have been telling me. I might just swap it with a recorded sound clip or something. It's basically supposed to be an emulation of Lung Buster from Balloon Party. It's not a remix of it, but I just took the style that song had
