Idea (Not sure if appropriate here): WIP Hijacking

Postby BinaryBludgeon » 10 May 2012 20:57

I'm not sure if I should post this here, but it seems like it would be a fun derivative of remix war. As its name suggests, you take someone's WIP, and then finish it yourself. If this isn't supposed to be here, just delete it, or move it to another forum. Any feedback?

That's basically collabing without releasing the finished product together.

I'd actually be interested in this, it feels different enough from collabing to warrant an event.

i like this idea. someone's turd is another person's treasure. I like the idea of a hand-off.

It works best if that WIP is abandoned and not being actively perfected.

This sounds like fun, but it could very easily upset or offend the artist you're hijacking.
Imagine you're working on a song and you're really excited about it so you decide to release a WIP. You continue on and you finish the song and while you're uploading you notice somebody else has also finished your song. People are absolutely adoring your song as finished by someone else and your song is overlooked as a knockoff or as "the original that's not as good as the remix". It's as if somebody else has taken and raised your child without your consent or knowledge.
Pretty extreme situation, but something to think about all the same.

It's not necessarily collabing, I mean you basically have free reign to finish it how you like and there's so many creative ways you could take things. It could work out neatly to see how other's interpret your ideas.

I have nothing against the idea, but I kinda think that consent is needed because of what Rayn said. =w=

Hijacking has a negative sound to it. I would certainly not agree to that if it was to be done in a "quiet" way. That's stealing. If, however, the artist would agree to it, then why not? I am sure there are quite a few people with projects they didn't manage to finish and are just sitting there and waiting to be completed.

I agree with most people here. The artist should probably ask for permission before "hijacking". That aside, I'd definitely be interested in contributing a wip or finishing something.

Well, I was thinking that you would make a WIP for the event, and then pass it off.

Ah, that's not a bad idea. This sounds interesting. I'd certainly participate.

i have so many unfinished WIPs i can't even count them...

though where would people upload these things? (either an mp3 of it because fast listening and deciding and then the package with everything; this would be a good thing since DAWs and plugs vary person by person... or one could just say, standardize: midi and wav stems plus any samples, and maybe a listing of what was made with what vsti/au/dxi/ladspa/flgenerator/buzzmachine/etc...)

also any rules on what would a "left-to-rot" wip would be like? lenght limit? just a simple loop or a thing with an already existing theme (that the remaker would most likely either re-interpret, append to it or completely disregard)
