[PP] Maud Pie Album: 100% rock-based avant-garde

Postby Supersaw Hoover » 17 Feb 2015 19:51

DEADLINE IS AT 8 PM EST ON THURSDAY MARCH 12TH

No, I do not mean rock as in the music genre.

I mean rock as in actual rocks.

Samples of rocks. Field recordings.

This is an album hosted by Pinkamena Party based on the idea of ||3/Nex-x to make an album that Maud Pie herself would enjoy listening to, with the supposition that Maud would fancy an entire album of avant-garde sound art only using samples of rocks dashing against each other, scraping against each other, being hit with water maybe, tumbling down hills, you know the sort of sounds.

This album is intended to be played 100% straight, with straightforward titles of tracks as well. We will be strict with the requirement of rocks-only, with only a couple of exceptions (see below).

Genres accepted for this compilation:
- musique concrète [example: Pierre Schaeffer - Études de bruits (1948)]
- sound collage / sound art / acousmatic music [example: Manuela Blackburn - Switched On (with words from the artist!)
- lowercase [example: anything by Steve Roden, like this
- field recording [example: going outside with a field recorder and just hitting rocks together and recording it and sending that recording in]
- "avant-garde" (use your best judgment)
- soft noise (aka not harsh, rumbly things are fine)

Nothing with a conventional beat will be considered for this release. If it has any rhythm, it must either be a nearly indecipherable polyrhythm or an alienated pulse that is not throughout the entire track. Rhythm as in some of that Pierre Schaeffer link above is also permissable, but keep it esoteric.

Effects are allowed, but it should still retain a "rock-like feel."

There is one exception to the only-rock-sounds rule. It is prepared piano or other instrument with rocks. Remember to title your piece in a blunt manner in order to make it clear what you are listening to. Listen to some Cage prepared piano for inspiration there. Only rocks in there, though, no cheating. It also needs to sound "rock-like." Remember this.

You may also collaborate. Still only rocks.

Also, please do not send rock poetry read aloud. That is not the point of this album. Shh. No talking. Only rocks.
If you feel moved to write rock poetry, please write some and submit it with your entry. They will be compiled into a document that will be attached to the album as a bonus item.

In addition, please no rock puns in titles. Titles should be blunt and descriptive, optimally.

Please send all entries in WAV form to [email protected].

Deadline is March 12, 2015 AT 8 PM EST. It will be released on March 14, 2015, which is the one year anniversary of the Maud Pie episode's original airing.

Please respond with any questions and such.

what if to properly demonstrate what I think a rock represents, it should be a very steady beat? ;D

also i dont believe in overcomplicating music for the sake of complicating it, but whatevs, im hype to make a thing

The concept is very not beat-oriented and focused on arrhythmic styles of music / sound art. A conventionally rhythmic piece would honestly be out of place in this case.

Of course I'm in. What'd you expect.

I am totally going to make everyone around me think I'm some weird autistic kid, recording rocks in public :O
Or perhaps something else. I'll think of something that'll rock your world.

Haha, yeah, this was definitely a thing a year ago that kind of just dropped off of existing. But now it is definitely in existence!

By the way, I only have one entry from a year ago, and it's someone who knows who they are already. So if you submitted something a year ago for an album that had a description SUPER similar to this that never came out, you should probably submit it again. It's the same project.

Pebbles and boulders are fine. Freesound.org rocks are fine. Comets are giant pieces of ice in space, and are not rocks.

Excuse me, vernacular failure, what i meant was asteroids, those ARE rocks, right?
but more importantly, meteorites.
are meteorites okay? or would they be too harsh?

If you can sample a meteorite/asteroid scratching something, or something. I don't think we're including sonification of gravitational data here...

I'd say that is okay as an element, but it should overall feel "rocklike." Also, if it doesn't sound super rocklike, make sure your title makes it obvious that it is rocks and you should be ok :3

It will not be accepted if it has elements other than rocks. 100% rocks is a requirement. I'll be a strict ass about that!

Try figuring out how to make rocks sound like an 808! Fun sound design!

Also, keep in mind that even though rocks are rather percussive, we're not accepting anything that is "conventionally rhythmic."

Nah I wasn't planning to do anything rythmic, just like have some really distorted reverbarated 808 snares strewn about.

But the basis of an 808 snare is pretty much just a sinewave and a noisewave, so i could probably improvise on that. i probably won't do that though. I think i'm going to like put some autotune over me stuffing rocks in a tube with my mic at the top. maybe with some amp distortion.

I'm having lots of fun distorting and stretching rock sounds, but it's starting to really not sound like anything rock-like anymore. It's nearly impossible to tell this is even recorded material at all. I'm reminded of this interesting experiment from some time ago: https://soundcloud.com/bong-iguana/maki ... out-of-the
