Official Discussion Thread (Ghost Edit)

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

I used to have HD 201's. They were pretty good, I think. Only reason I don't have them anymore is because my brother stepped on them and broke them. They were kinda cheap, too. Something like $40 Au.

I use the HD-205's, as does PropellerEscape. :3

I've used them HD205 before. Superb audio, but only buy them if you don't mind your ears hurting like fuck after ~40 minutes of use, maybe less.

I never had this problem. Head shape must be a factor here (not to say you have a funny shape head or anything!)

Just a quick question for you guys.
My friend Life Guide entered the Spinnin' Talent Pool (no I'm not gonna ask you to give him a vote :P ), and he's currently at #63 with it. We're listening to tracks that have scored higher so far, and we've both had a lot of tracks we didn't like at all.

So to mess with him I submitted Secret Potion :P
https://inquiry.spinninrecords.nl/sr/tr ... 7713&ext=1

He just said "NO if it actually gets above mine I will cry because Secret Potion's so not right for this competition" xD
I'm just doing this for fun, but I'd love to see how high it can get if only to have a good laugh :P so your vote would be most welcome :3

I am running for president at my school. I had my speech today. I think it went pretty good for practicing it only twice. Except for I was looking at my speech the whole time instead of the crowd. :/ I am the only guy running. It's me against 3 girls. It would have been against 4 girls but one dropped the competition.
To be president, I had to get some forms signed. I forged my parent's signature for them. Because my parents didn't say I could run. But, if I don't even live here next year, that won't even matter. Plus, I don't even know if I would win so yea. I'm mostly in just to see if I would win. So yea. If I win, that is good because I could say I was class president on my résumé. And if I don't win, no harm done to me.

My school has a student council. It's the people in charge of setting up for dances and planning spirit week. My school also has an assembly every Monday and the president is supposed to lead the assemblies. The president also runs the student council meetings and is in charge of lots of things in student council.

Even Sennheiser gaming headsets are good for mixing, as weird as that sounds.

Also, I never got the whole mantra about "never mix on headphones, headphones are evil!" Every song I've ever made, I've made on headphones, and the mix has always turned out just fine on all speakers I've ever used to listen to them. It seems to me like one of those "best practices" that's closer to superstition than to anything else.
Notebook Memories, the debut album from yours truly, is currently up on my bandcamp for free. Any feedback, encouragement, hate mail, etc. is highly appreciated! Even just listening is pretty cool of you tbh.

I tend to go back and forth between using monitors, headphones, car speakers, and other speakers because the more you get to hear the track through different speakers the more you can pick things out and refine them. I feel like you shouldn't just mix from one set of monitors/headphones because you'll have mixed for that specific item without knowing how it sounds from other perspectives

My friend likes to mix in his car and in his garage because he gets nice bass in his car and he gets better mid frequencies in his garage. But, neither offers full sound at a good high quality level.

I just use my beats and my Sony home theater system because why not? I don't need anything über professional or pay for anything beyond average consumer products if I am not even good at composing yet.

Beats have the worst bass response ever. Personally, I'd never touch em.

But yeah, I'd still recommend trying your mixes out on almost every speaker you own. I usually do a quick mix on my headphones and see what it sounds like on my laptop speakers and my phone, sometimes my tv, then I go back to headphones. But it's also really important to know what a professionally mixed song sounds like on whatever you mix. If it sounds like the pro track on your shitty iPhone speakers, you're probably doing alright.

As for composition, you could do that with earbuds for all I care. The sound design and general processing is gonna need something with good response or you're not gonna get as clear a picture.
I'm not here anymore, but if you want you can still just call me Mr. BigBagelBoggle!

eery wrote:Besides, as I understand, it doesn't sound(If I didn't misunderstand) you've ever had the opportunity to test out monitors, so how would you know if it was better or not?

I've heard most of my finished music on high quality speaker systems at one point or another (via friends) and they sounded fine, although I haven't actually mixed on monitors before, so I don't know - it's possible that I've been underestimating my mixing ability this whole time and I'll somehow end up making amazing mixes on monitors, but I highly doubt it.

Also, yes, mixing on everything. Yes. While I do the majority of composing (and simultaneously the majority of mixing and sound design, since that's how making music actually works) on headphones for obvious reasons, I've recently taken to doing a final pass including all my other sets of earbuds and crappy speakers as well. No regrets so far.
