Official Discussion Thread (Ghost Edit)

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Why the hate? For a simple audio editing tool, it seems to do its job well as being simple and completing simple tasks as long as the user knows how to use it
I use to kind of "remix" tracks on it before I started actually producing. I was pretty good at using the program about 3 years ago. It worked fine for me.

I think of it like MS paint. It's simple and does the simple tasks well.
Don't ask it to do more than it should be able to do.

Removing instruments? try that, brah

I've never tried that. Mostly because I've never had a need to do that. :/ I'm not sure Audacity is the best program for that.

That was a fancy remix.

I got some good news from the record labels. I am talking about mrsuicidesheep specifically. And the food news is: nothing. I don't have good news. I have some regular news though. I didn't get my song accepted. But the dude liked it. So whatevs. :/

I was watching sub.sound on twitch today and I think I might have learned a couple things from his style of work that I would like to try out the next one I make a son.
I feel like my skill level is actually quite improved. Like, for melodies and stuff at least. So I feel like I could do like ambient and trance and house type music pretty decent. Like, I think my next song will be a huge step-up from previous works because I will try to implement skills thy I have recently learned into this song. We'll see

Lemme tell you about removing instruments. It's complicated and requires very CPU intensive, very complex and very expensive programs to do. These programs are what we in the area of audio call "fucking witchcraft" and trust me Audacity is none of these things.

The programs that CAN remove instruments though are so ridiculously effective at it that if you buy them you can actually turn them into your job because they're witchcraft and people are willing to pay for a slice of your sweet, delicious witchcraft for their film projects.

Oh by the way, I'm not kidding. The way these things actually work is almost always kept a secret and the working professionals I know who use them pretty often just palm it off as witchcraft.

I'm serious. I'm not gonna pay people with potatoes just to get vocals. I have no money, I'm not allowed to get PayPal because my om said so, and I'm on the verge of just quitting music production.

Well, thats your problem, isnt it? In that case, shouldnt you be polite when you get answers? Makes people more likely to help you and all that.

Hook yourself up with a studio instrumental, or studio acapella or recreate the instrumental or just figure out some way you can use the instrumental without doing major alterations. Those are your only real options. Try to think creatively.

I think you make music for the wrong reasons. Its very much a get-rich-very-slowly scheme, I'm afraid.

Not that I see how thats related to the previous discussion about instrumentals.

Well if you're just aiming to get a vocal stem sans instruments, if you can track down an instrumental version of a song, just plop it in another track and phase invert it. Should cancel out the instrumental parts and leave a (probably not that great) vocal stem. Sometimes people are a little sneaky though, they'll make either the vocal or instrumental vary slightly in tempo (say over 4 bars the tempo shifts + or - 0.5 bpm and then back and repeats) which can make it pretty much impossible to get a clean vocal, so be wary that that might happen.

Oh, and trust me when I say that you should try to be easy on yourself when you're doing music. If you're having trouble doing something, getting worked up over it will only make you feel worse and definitely won't get you any closer to what you want to happen. I had problems with this and to be honest the only thing that ever solved my problems with it was time and patience with myself. I find that when I'm really frustrated, it helps for me to stop trying to write songs and focus on learning something that I can try later, so when I'm finally in the right frame to try writing something I have some extra knowledge I can use to do something I've never done before.

Am I the only one who feels that CC is a bit unprotected? I mean, hypothetically, if I had to take someone to court because they were selling my music, would I be able use a CC license in a court of law? Last time I checked you need something filed for copyright in order to protect it in a court.
"But copyright is restrictive!"
Well, yeah but you and your label are the ones who decide if you are going to strike a remix/creative work or not. If I were to file Fade Away for copyright, YouTube won't automatically shut down its remixes, I would have to tell YouTube to do that. Copyright may not be perfect, but it does let me protect my stuff when I need to.

When you want help on a song, so I'd typically your go-to person?
Mine is synthis. He is such a nice dude. And he is helpful.
Back when I was freshly inexperienced, he gave me some drum samples to help me get going.
And he pointed me towards a voice actor when I needed one. He knows a good amount about music. He is one helpful guy.
