I don't get that problem, but I mostly just have issues with his mixing.
his newer stuff he demo'd at Unicon showed some improvement on that from though. But that was a youtube video, can't really say much based on that.

There's no denying that a stereo spread bass sounds really cool on stereo speakers, and you also get a higher perceived loudness, which is probably what people like about it as well. Unfortunately, you are basically raping both your bass and your mix if you stereo spread it, and like Lavender said, it is obnoxious to listen to on headphones in some cases.

I spread all my basses, and now I feel like I'm doing something really wrong by doing that

I don't think I spread my basses. I add chorusing effects occasionally, but I don't activley stereo widen. But again, chorus effects...those might do that...do they?

Chorus actually modulates delay time on two hard-panned left and right delay signals.

So yes, it's pretty much a stereo widening effect.

Ah, that explains why I have to put more time into mixing chorused basses.
I'll have to keep that in mind.

And in that case, would the effect added (such as the chorus) get removed?

nope, because there's still the time delay. most my music I drop to mono anyway. that way it sounds good even on systems that are messed up (like that only get one speaker output, for instance). and a lot of systems end up flattening to mono anyway.

Yeah, I made a really nice setup the other day and made those 2 wobbles and about 8-10 more just by changing the wavetable and phase amount. It almost felt like I was cheating

I have a lot of leads, plucks, and fx patches too, if that's what you mean. I still need to make some pads though....

I think you're talking about mine :P

Protip: Widening effects can make a gritty bass sound pretty good, but if you're going for that kind of effect, make sure you do it separately so it doesn't impact the subbass, which should be kept mono and centered.

Generally having wider basses isn't a very good thing, especially if you want your music to be played in club or concert settings (they're usually mono setups). Most good mixes will usually have their stereo mixes shaped like a cone < from the lowest to highest frequencies. That being said, you don't have to slam your mid basses into the center; panning is a very helpful and interesting effect. Take the way Koan sound pans their basses for example (as koan sound's style is not exactly "club music":

Just be mindful when panning/stereo seperarting your basses that you don't cause unwanted phasing; that can cause uneasy headaches when listening.
Well I'm pretty much done with this site (it wasn't about the April Fool's joke I actually loved that). If for some reason somebody wants to contact me or something (not like any of you even care lol):

It's really more of a creative choice than any other. I think that widened basses do sound really awesome, but I've also came to the conclusion that you shouldn't widen them too far, as widening everything will clutter up the mix. After all, a good mix can make a song. I've sorta mentally made a chart of how far to spread things in a mix to make the least amount of clutter:

Center:
Kick, snare, sub bass. Maybe the odd hat out if you're using an odd number of hats/percussion

Widening order: (farthest spread at the bottom)
- Basses used in drops
- "lead basses", played usually with the main lead or main beat
- hats and percussion
- Pads
- The lead synth

This is purely subjective, obviously.

EDIT: And as people have been saying in other replies, widening basses in club music can mess with the mono.
