System Specs anyone?

Postby Mr.Afrox » 26 Jun 2013 21:53

I guess I'm just wondering what kind of specs your PC has; what everyone is working with.

I would imagine, that many, possibly even most of us have more than one PC (Mac?) at home.

To keep it simple, I'm just asking about the PC that you use the most often. The one that you sit in front of the great majority of the time.

Of course, since I started this thread, I should go first.

Specs:

Processor: LGA1366 Intel Core i7 965 Extreme edition. Tho intel will be releasing 6 core i9's in the near future. For extream insaneness you could run a xenon server board which has room for 2 xenon processors. I don't know the market that well for those tho.

Motherboard: ASUS Rampage II Extreme Intel X58. ROG Boeards tend to be more expensive than normal boards since they overclock so well. Not always the best value but sometimes its about extreme performance lol.

Case: Antec twelve hundred is the best air cooling case out there atm IMO but for the ultimate setup you will want water cooling. Silverstone (cant fully remember the case name)or Lian Li PC-V1000Z are designed for water cooling.

RAM: 2 sets of corsier Dominator DDR3 PC3-16000C8 RAM. should give you 12GB total.

HDD: Go fro a solid state drive for your boot disk. This will give you the fastest hard disk for loading games and applications. You can then get a 1TB or some of the new 2TB hard disks released for file storage.

Cooling: Water cooling all the way. Unfortunately your gonna have to mix and match parts and arrange them so they fit, So I can't really recommend. swiftech full watercooling kit tho is a good start tho.

PSU: 1KW PSU minimum. Corsier, OCZ and BeQuiet are all good makes.

Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium - Fatal1ty Professional Series 7.1 Sound Card. One of the best out there.

CD Drive: Blu ray rewriter is the way to go.

OS: Windows 8 Pro

GFX: 2X (or maybe 3 if you want/can fit) MSI GTX285 HydroGen OC. Fastest single gpu Graphics card out there. Run In SLI for top performance. Tho in two weeks ATI will release there 5 series which is said to be 60% performance boost over the HD4 series. Until benchmarks and real world testing happens who knows. But in 2 weeks that spec list will be out of date.

I'm curious afrock, is that build actually your own, or your dream build? Because by the way you talk about it, it sounds like you're recommending parts for a build.

Umm... But then why would you ask everybody else to post their system specs when you're just posting suggestions and not yours... Also, this should really be under the community subforum as well.

i5-2500K processor, Gigabyte Z68A-D3H-B3, 8gb RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6700 graphics, a 2TB hard drive and Win8 (I didn't have money for an OS and was having compatibility issues when I tried Linux, so I downloaded the consumer preview and then upgraded). My PC is the most expensive thing I own, and probably the most expensive thing I am likely to own for one or two decades. If I had infinity money I'd probably have something similar to the PC in the OP, but I really really can't complain, this one's pretty awesome. (She's called Rosie)

Hey Afrock, what's up with your graphics cards?
GFX: 2X (or maybe 3 if you want/can fit) MSI GTX285 HydroGen OC. Fastest single gpu Graphics card out there. Run In SLI for top performance. Tho in two weeks ATI will release there 5 series which is said to be 60% performance boost over the HD4 series. Until benchmarks and real world testing happens who knows. But in 2 weeks that spec list will be out of date.
I'm pretty certain that your card isn't very fast, unless you're being sarcrastic. But on the offchance that you aren't...

the gtx 285 has 240 cuda cores. The gtx 770 has 1536... I don't really need to list off any more specs to show that the gtx 285 isn't much fast anymore.

I was looking to buy a new laptop (don't judge my choice of laptop over desktop), and this looks like a good place for ask about specs:

i3 3110M 2.4GHz processor
6GB RAM
1TB HDD ( <3 )

Basically, is the processor good enough? People have old me i3 just isn't powerful enough and that I should get i5 - but I can't really afford an i5 laptop.

i7 2670 2.2GHz Dual quad cores (performes like an 8 core system)
GT555M 2GB (same performance as the GT630 but without the 3D capabilities)
8GB RAM
USB3.0
750GB HD
1920x1080 (invaluable big screen- plenty of space)
Win7
Full size fast responsive keyboard

Got this setup brand new about 2 years ago for $1k. It blew my socks off. Still a good deal if you can pick one up. I recommend nothing less if you want to use Kontakt and like video games. Buy an ASUS.

Except for Win8, jealous as fuck.
My hard drives are crammed (175GB + 400GB), only 5GB RAM, and some terribly bad processor (I only know that it's solo core...).
My laptop sucks.

I've had to work with a single-core CPU my whole life. Running a minecraft server for 10 man, making music, occasionally playing games like League Of Legends, Quake, Halo, and just using this laptop for everything, and everything at once, just sucks.
My fucking internet browsers (no matter which) are jammed (old age I presume) too! Frustration!

Lol, I'm looking through here and seeing 16gb and 32gb ram computers with really cool graphics cards and I'm just sitting here with my 4gb normal laptop. Highest ram I've ever had on a computer was 8gb and that's my old desktop which I don't really use anymore.

When I move out and go to college (I'm moving to germany for college), I'm thinking I'll have around $15000 saved up, so I'm going to build myself a really nice computer (top end processor, insane RAM and 3xtop end videocards, full watercooling for CPU, GPUs and I believe you can also WC ram now, 2 x 200mm fans since WCing will keep the important things cool easily, with 3 x 27" 1440p monitors. God, it's going to be way overpowered, but god it's going to be fun to play with that thing). And since I'll have money left over, I'll be rebuilding my studio (can't take it with me!) with a set of nice expensive studio monitors + studio sub, a big spacey desk, a mixing board set into the desk in such a way that it sorta slopes up to the monitors and it isn't a thick piece of equipment on my desk in the way, a nice 61-key midi keyboard, hardware synthesizers and hardware plugins, fully acoustically treated room... Man, I can really dream big. Only problem, is that everything costs way more in Germany than it does in the USA. In some cases. I just did a recheck, and my dream computer would cost $6001 in merica, or 3305 € in deutschland ($4304). Not sure how that transfers over with specialty stuff like studio equipment, but hopefully it transfers over in such a way that I'd have left over money >_>
